What is Colon Cancer?

The large intestine is mainly divided into: colon, rectum, and attached to these parts are the appendix, anal canal and anal skin, and cancers occurring in these parts are known as colorectal cancer. Colon cancer is the most common cancer among males in Malaysia (affecting about 15 per 100,000) and the second most common cancer among females in Malaysia (affecting about 11.1 per 100,000), and the third leading cause of cancer deaths in Malaysia.

According to data released by the World Health Organization in 2020, colon cancer is the third most common cancer after breast and lung cancer, and its cancer-related deaths are second only to lung cancer. Approximately 1.9 million people worldwide are diagnosed with colon cancer and more than 900,000 patients die from colorectal cancer.

So can middle and late-staged colon cancer be cured? Minimally invasive techniques with few side effects and minimal trauma can help colorectal cancer patients preserve their anus as well as their bowel, avoiding removal as well as suffering from an artificial anus and effectively prolonging survival.
